Sunday 17 October the Kitsch Biennale 2010 closed with a peak of 500 visitors.

The Kitsch Biennale in Palazzo Cini at San Vio was visited by more than 5000 visitors during 4 weeks of opening.

La Kitsch Biennale 2010 si è chiusa domenica 17 ottobre 2010, con un picco di 500 visitatori.

In 4 settimane di apertura oltre 5000 visitatori hanno visitato la Kitsch Biennale a Palazzo Cini a San Vio.

The number of visitors, 3.000 people, who have visited Palazzo Cini and seen Kitsch Biennale 2010 during the first 20 days bear witness of the public appreciation and its success.

Due to this, World Wide Kitsch decided to prolong the exhibition until Sunday 17th October 2010.

Il numero di visitatori, 3.000 persone, che hanno visitato Palazzo Cini e visto la Kitsch Biennale 2010 nei primi 20 giorni testimonia dell'apprezzamento del pubblico e del suo successo.

Per questa ragione World Wide Kitsch ha deciso di prorogare l'esposizione fino al 17 ottobre 2010.

In the course of the KB10 jury meeting 9th to 11th April, the following kitsch painters were accepted:

The Kitsch Biennale is an international exhibition for figurative and narrative painting.

This year, the jury consisted of Bjørn Li (The Nerdrum Institute) and the kitsch painters Odd Nerdrum, Helene Knoop, Jan-Ove Tuv and David Dalla Venezia.

They have focused on applicants displaying the serious and earnest expression. This sets the exhibition concept apart from the general trend of contemporary figurative painting. Works with an eternal outlook have been preferred.

The number of applicants rose greatly from the last Kitsch Biennale 2008 in Munich, Germany. This has allowed the jury to heighten the criteria, leading to a reduced number of accepted applicants.
This fits perfectly with the exclusive space of Palazzo Cini at San Vio.

La Kitsch Biennale è una mostra internazionale di pittura figurativa e narrativa.

Quest’anno la giuria era composta da Bjørn Li (Nerdrum Institute) e dai pittori kitsch Odd Nerdrum, Helene Knoop, Jan-Ove Tuv and David Dalla Venezia.

La giuria ha puntato su quei candidati che hanno dimostrato più serietà e sincerità espressiva. Ciò pone questa esposizione in una posizione a parte nei confronti della generale tendenza della pittura figurativa contemporanea. Si sono perciò preferite opere che avessero una prospettiva di eternità.

Il numero dei candidati è cresciuto considerevolmente dalla precedente edizione della Kitsch Biennale 2008 a Monaco di Baviera, Germania. Ciò ha permesso alla giuria di aumentare i criteri di valutazione, portandola a ridurre il numero di candidati selezionati.
La qual cosa si addice perfettamente all’esclusività della sede espositiva, Palazzo Cini a San Vio.

Why “kitsch”?

The painters invited to exhibit at The Kitsch Biennale 2010 in Venice have been chosen from their ability to create life on canvas – an idea deeply rooted in European Humanism that presupposes insight into anatomy and human psychology, a mind for pathos and a sense for the archetypical narrative.
Yet, these values are rootless in contemporary art, which generally disregards skill and aims to reflect the time. They were not included in the modern concept of art (originally “fine art”), which was born about 250 years ago. Rejecting handcraft and sincerity, art represents a break with the values of the Renaissance and Baroque and not a continuation of them.

Because of this situation an alternative to art is needed, and The Kitsch Biennale seeks to present it. But why use the word “kitsch”?

The term is about 150 years old, and has commonly been used in a negative and disparaging sense. It denotes sentimentality and pathos in music, sculpture and painting.

From the 20th century on, ”kitsch” started to be used more theoretically and afterwards as the negative opposite of art. Painters who still wanted to make paint look like living skin, were considered old-fashioned and labelled with this term. According to Hermann Broch: «In art the evil is represented by kitsch». Thus, kitsch is not even ”bad art”, but forms a system of its own.

In 1996, however, Odd Nerdrum discovered the positive potential in the term. He started to claim “kitsch” as a positive superstructure for figurative, non-ironic and narrative painting to which the concept of “kitsch” fits better than “art”.
Consequently, a growing number of figurative painters are now calling themselves “kitsch painters”.

According to the positive view of kitsch:

• The eternal perspective is preferable to a contemporary, limited horizon.
• A “sentimental” or “pathetic” image is no cause of shame (unless badly painted...).
• Quality is more important than originality.

Perchè “kitsch”?

I pittori invitati ad esporre alla Kitsch Biennale 2010 di Venezia sono stati scelti per la loro abilità nel creare la vita sulla tela - un’idea profondamente radicata nell’Umanesimo Europeo, che presuppone comprensione dell’anatomia e della psiche umana, attenzione al pathos e senso del racconto degli archetipi.
Eppure questi valori non hanno radici nell’arte contemporanea, che generalmente disdegna l’abilità tecnica ed ambisce soprattutto a rappresentare il proprio tempo. Questi valori non sono stati inclusi nel moderno concetto di arte (originariamente “belle arti”), quando nacque circa 250 anni fa. Rifiutando l’artigianalità e la sincerità l’arte rappresenta una rottura con i valori del Rinascimento e del Barocco e non una loro continuazione.

In questa situazione un’alternativa all’arte è necessaria e la Kitsch Biennale cerca di offrirla. Ma perché usare la parola “kitsch”?

Questo termine risale a circa 150 anni fa e ha comunemente una connotazione negativa e dispregiativa. In musica, scultura e pittura denota sentimentalità e pathos.

A partire dal XX secolo il “kitsch” ha cominciato ad essere usato in senso teoretico e successivamente come opposto negativo dell’arte. I pittori che insistettero a voler far sembrare la pelle dipinta come vera furono considerati antiquati ed etichettati con questo termine. Secondo Hermann Broch: «In arte il male è rappresentato dal kitsch». Così il “kitsch” non è semplicemente “cattiva arte” ma forma un sistema a sé stante.

Tuttavia nel 1996 Odd Nerdrum ne scopre il potenziale positivo. Egli comincia così a sostenere il “kitsch” come sovrastruttura positiva per la pittura figurativa, non-ironica e narrativa a cui il concetto di “kitsch” si addice meglio di quello di “arte”.
Conseguentemente un numero crescente di pittori figurativi comincia a parlare di sé come “pittori-kitsch”.

Perciò in accordo con una visione positiva del kitsch:

• La prospettiva d’eternità è preferibile ad un contemporaneo, limitato orizzonte.
• Un’immagine “sentimentale” o “patetica” non è motivo di vergogna (a meno che sia mal dipinta...).
• La qualità è più importante dell’originalità.

Con questa esposizione e catalogo vi diamo il benvenuto in una disciplina vivente.
